Bite splint / night guard  Del Mar, CA

bite splintnightguard

Stop clenching & grinding! If you are one of the millions of people that clench or grind your teeth together, you may greatly benefit from a bite splint (night guard). There are many reasons why patients clench and grind, but no matter what the cause, the destruction to the teeth, gums and bone in a person that is clenching or grinding can be very substantial.

The process of making the bite splint (night guard) is relatively simple. First we make impressions of your upper and lower teeth. Then at your next visit we will try the bite splint (night guard) in, make any adjustments that are necessary and advise you on how often to wear your night guard and how to clean it.

Sports guard / mouth guard   Del Mar, CA

mouth-guards

When playing any sport that has a significant risk of injury, it is recommended that everyone should wear a mouth guard, even those that have braces.

Mouth guards can help prevent major injuries such as broken teeth by cushioning the upper teeth. If you wear braces or another fixed dental appliance on your lower jaw, we may suggest a mouth guard for these teeth as well. If you have braces, a mouth guard creates a wall between your braces and your cheeks, protecting your braces from damaging the soft tissue.

A mouth guard helps protect against jaw joint injuries, and may help reduce concussions.

Make sure that the mouth guard properly fits your mouth while you are wearing it, making it easy to talk and breathe.

There are three types of mouth guards:

1. Stock

Stock mouth guards are inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. Unfortunately, they often don’t fit very well. They can be bulky and can make breathing and talking difficult.

2. Boil-and-bite

Boil-and-bite mouth guards can be bought at many sporting goods stores and sometimes offer a better fit than stock mouth guards. They should be softened in water, then inserted and allowed to adapt to the shape of your mouth. Even by following the directions carefully you will frequently end up with a poor-fitting mouth guard.

3. Custom-fitted

Custom-fitted mouth guards are made by your dentist for you personally. They are more expensive than the other versions, but because they are customized they can offer a better fit than anything you can buy off-the-shelf.

Talk to Dr. Fitzpatrick about selecting a mouth guard that works best for you. Although mouth guards typically only cover the upper teeth, Dr. Fitzpatrick or your orthodontist may suggest that you use a mouth guard on the lower teeth if you have braces.

Please remember:  all removable appliances or retainers should be taken out when playing any contact sport.

Snore Guard / sleep appliance  Del Mar, CA

unnamed

A snore guard (sleep appliance) is worn when you sleep.  A snore guard uses normal body reflexes to help keep the airway open. The device fits snugly on the upper teeth. When the lower jaw closes, the lower front teeth naturally strike a ramp on the guard and are advanced along the ramp moving the lower jaw to a more-forward position. An opening in the device facilitates the passage of air for mouth breathing.  By inducing the lower jaw and tongue to a more-forward position, the device induces a more-open airway resulting in a reduction in snoring.
